Contact lenses can be both a blessing and a curse. While they offer freedom from the hassle of wearing glasses, they also pose a risk of infection if proper hygiene is not maintained, especially during the monsoon season. According to Dr. Neeraj Sanduja, an ophthalmologist and eye surgeon, contact lens wearers must follow certain measures to ensure eye health.
First and foremost, it is crucial to keep the storage case of the contact lens clean and disinfected. This helps prevent eye infections when reusing the lenses. Dr. Sanduja advises cleaning the lens case with warm soapy water and thoroughly drying it at least once a week before placing the lenses inside.
Additionally, it is important to avoid touching the eyes or lenses with dirty hands. Our hands come into contact with various germs and dirty surfaces throughout the day, so always remember to clean your hands before handling your lenses or touching your eyes.
Furthermore, it is advisable to refrain from swimming with contact lenses on. Swimming pools can be a breeding ground for infections, and tap water should also be avoided while rinsing the face or taking a shower with lenses on. These practices not only increase the risk of infection but can also cause micro-abrasions on the lenses.
Taking off contact lenses before sleeping is another essential step. When the eyes are closed, the cornea lacks oxygen from the air, which raises the risk of eye infection and can lead to vision blurring, swelling, and pain.
If the eyes feel dry, itchy, red, or irritated, it is best to avoid wearing contact lenses as these symptoms may indicate an eye infection.
Overwearing contact lenses beyond the recommended duration set by an eye specialist can result in corneal injury and keratitis due to corneal swelling.
Regularly replacing contact lenses is crucial to prevent chronic eye infections and irritation.
Cleaning the lenses regularly is also important. Failure to do so can lead to the accumulation of proteins, dust, and microbes on the lenses, which increases the risk of eye infection and chronic issues like papillary conjunctivitis.
When wearing contact lenses, it is advisable to avoid using eye makeup. If any cosmetic product or face cream comes into contact with the lenses, remove them and thoroughly wash your eyes.
In case of any irritation or infection while using contact lenses, it is essential to contact your eye doctor immediately.
