California-based contact lens manufacturer, Staar Surgical, is set to make significant cost savings and improve the reliability of its operations with the installation of a rooftop solar microgrid. The 1.1 MW grid-tied microgrid, located at the company’s production facility in Lake Forest, California, is expected to save Staar Surgical $325,000 in annual electricity bills. In addition to the financial benefits, the microgrid will also provide energy resilience during times when the central utility grid is affected. ReVamp Energy, a solar contractor, designed, installed, and will maintain the microgrid, which includes battery energy storage. The system consists of a 780 kW rooftop array and two newly-constructed carports, totaling 1,752 modules. This solar installation is estimated to reduce Staar Surgical’s electricity costs by approximately 50%. Furthermore, the microgrid will help prevent losses incurred from spoiled production runs caused by power outages during the manufacturing process. Jay Cutting, president of ReVamp Energy, emphasized the importance of uninterrupted power for contact lens manufacturing, stating that even a few seconds of power reduction can ruin an entire production run, resulting in significant financial losses. To ensure continuous power supply, excess solar production will be stored in a 450 kW battery that can provide backup power for up to 24 hours. The microgrid also includes a generator as an additional backup measure. ReVamp Energy has designed custom-made switchgear that automatically switches the site’s energy supply to backup power in the event of a power outage. The microgrid can be managed through the SolarEdge monitoring platform, enabling Staar Surgical and ReVamp Energy to track key parameters such as solar energy production, consumption, and battery energy levels in real-time from a single platform. Cutting praised SolarEdge technology for its role in maximizing energy production, ensuring reliability, and providing intelligent control for the microgrid.
