Revolutionizing the Contact Lens Industry: Manufacturer Secures Operations with Solar PowerCalifornia-based contact lens manufacturer, Staar Surgical, is set to save on operational costs and improve production efficiency with the installation of an on-site solar microgrid. The company recently inaugurated a 1.1 MW grid-tied microgrid on its production facility in Lake Forest, California. The rooftop solar array, designed and installed by solar contractor ReVamp Energy, is expected to result in annual electricity bill savings of $325,000. In addition to cost savings, the microgrid will provide energy resilience during times when the central utility grid is impacted. The system includes battery energy storage and a generator to ensure uninterrupted production. With the ability to store excess solar production, the microgrid will provide backup power for up to 24 hours, depending on the facility’s load requirements. The system also features a custom-made switchgear that automatically switches the site’s energy supply to backup power in the event of a power outage. Staar Surgical and ReVamp Energy will be able to monitor and manage the microgrid through the SolarEdge monitoring platform, tracking key parameters such as solar energy production, consumption, and battery energy levels in real-time. Jay Cutting, president of ReVamp Energy, emphasized the importance of SolarEdge technology in achieving high energy production, reliability, and intelligent control. The installation of the microgrid is expected to not only reduce costs but also prevent losses incurred by spoiled production runs due to power outages during the manufacturing process.
