Contact lenses can be a game-changer, providing comfort and clear vision. However, wearing them requires responsible usage. To shed light on the dos and don’ts of wearing contact lenses, we spoke to Dr Ajay Sharma, Ophthalmologist and Chief Medical Director at EyeQ.
Dos While Wearing Contact Lenses:
1. Prioritize Hygiene: Dr Sharma emphasizes the importance of good hygiene when using contact lenses. Washing your hands thoroughly with soap and water before touching your lenses helps prevent dirt and harmful germs from causing problems.
2. Follow Replacement Schedule: It’s crucial to follow the schedule given by your eye doctor for replacing your lenses. Wearing them for too long can lead to discomfort, reduce oxygen supply to your cornea, and increase the risk of eye infections.
3. Use Approved Cleaning Solutions: Dr Sharma highlights the significance of using solutions approved by your eye care specialist for lens cleaning and disinfection. This ensures compatibility with your lenses and safeguards your ocular health.
4. Maintain Clean Storage Cases: Your contact lens storage cases also require regular attention. Keep them clean, replace them as needed, and allow them to air dry between uses. This prevents the buildup of harmful microorganisms that can affect your lenses and eyes.
Don’ts While Wearing Contact Lenses:
1. Avoid Swimming with Lenses: Dr Sharma advises against swimming with your lenses on, whether in a pool, lake, or ocean. Water can introduce harmful microorganisms to your eyes, leading to infections and discomfort.
2. Don’t Sleep with Lenses In: Sleeping with your lenses should be avoided whenever possible as it restricts the much-needed oxygen supply to your cornea. This can potentially cause irritation, redness, and even infection. However, extended-wear lenses designed for overnight use are an exception, but it’s essential to follow your eye care professional’s recommendations.
3. Eye Allergies and Eye Drops: If you have any eye allergies, discontinue the use of contact lenses until the allergy is under control. Additionally, consult your eye care specialist for guidance on suitable eye drops as some may not be compatible with contact lenses.
4. Eye Makeup: Dr Sharma suggests avoiding applying eye makeup after inserting your lenses as makeup particles can get trapped beneath the lenses, causing irritation. Applying makeup before putting in your lenses can prevent this issue.
By following these dos and don’ts, you can enjoy the benefits of contact lenses while prioritizing your eye health. Remember to schedule regular check-ups with your eye care specialist to ensure your lenses meet your vision needs and maintain healthy eyes.
